Now they’re dodging each other in the neighborhood, and Noreen is spending time working on pints of Ben & Jerry’s instead of her romance with Rick, the also-lost boyfriend she met at career counseling. A new adventure might be just what they need. Their destination Provence, the ultimate lavender trip. It turns into the trip of a lifetime, filled with Van Gogh and vineyards, wine and chocolate, plus lavender and more lavender. Join Noreen, Rosie and Tess as they get back on track!
The Wildwater Walking Club Back on Track Book 2 of The Wildwater Walking Club series Volume 2 9781942671206 Claire Cook Books
In Back on Track, Cook re-introduces us to the delightful trio from Wildwater Walking Club. Noreen is still friends with Tess and Rosie, but the women’s commitment to their walking club has waned, even though their close friendships have not. Since there are signs of “Fitbit cheating” going on, they meet over pints of Ben & Jerry’s to strategize on how to get back on track. And let the fun begin!Noreen only has six months of salary left of her corporate buyout. She wants to get certified as a Health Coach. Ironically, she is walking in the “Walk on By” shoes from her former company that she helped brand with the marketing campaign “Shed the Outgrown”- something Noreen is having trouble doing and a message that is echoed throughout this story.
Noreen is also questioning her choice in men. Her current love interest, Rick, who she met at an outplacement counseling class, is also in transition. He was an “ethical hacking wizard” and has a Pokeman Go habit – something that has ongoing repercussions. Their relationship is going through a “neutral” stage.
Tess is a recent empty nester and a third grade teacher with a summer cultural enrichment grant. Rosie is juggling her tween boys, her elderly father, and her inherited lavender farm. Cook has created three relatable female characters and the author’s observations on pop culture – what’s in and what’s not – is always hilarious through the filter of Noreen, her down-to-earth heroine.
The women embark on an eight day longboat trip on the Rhone River. It’s fun to see how the women manage and stick with their plan of 10,000 steps each day, incorporating excursions in the French towns and the ship’s upper deck. They also come together to help Tess with an ill-advised choice of roommates, Joy - someone Tess didn’t really know in high school but had recently linked up with on Facebook.
I loved the camaraderie of the women and the exploration of new places. For anyone who had a Starry Night poster on their wall (like I did!), you’ll love the chapter when the women walk in Van Gogh’s footsteps and reveal insights into his life and legacy. Never having been to France, I also enjoyed reading about the Point d’Avignon bridge, the hilltop village of Monieux, and the lavender fields of Sault.
For lavender lovers, there’s plenty of history and useful recipes too!
The chapters involving Noreen’s health coach certification were informative - tips on how to get back on a regular workout routine, how neutrality can be the enemy of growth, and lessons on fixed mindset vs growth mindsets resonated with me. And I love how the women use Noreen’s coaching, their bond of friendship, and walking to get through adversity.
Back on Track has a light tone filled with snappy dialogue. It leaves you with a sense of empowerment and insights into how to “move forward” in relationships and in life. Enjoy!

The Wildwater Walking Club Back on Track Book 2 of The Wildwater Walking Club series Volume 2 9781942671206 Claire Cook Books Reviews
The Wildwater Walking Club Back on Track
We have all been there in our lives, struggling to find our own purpose, in Claire Cook’s most recent book, The Wildwater Walking Club Back on Track, the gals from the Wildwater Walking Club help each other through their own struggles. Noreen, Tess and Rosie hold each other accountable and encourage each other. They are the kind of friends that everyone needs in their life.
The Wildwater Walking Club Back on Track shares the power of friends and the need to go beyond your comfort zone, but it does so in a light-hearted and fun way. Claire Cook is the master of reinvention and in this book she once again shows us why she earned that title. The Wildwater Walking Club Back on Track is the continuing story of Noreen, Tess and Rosie who are neighbors that have banded together through their daily walks. In her usual sassy and casual style, Claire Cook makes reading feel like a chat with your best girl friends.
Each chapter starts with Noreen’s daily step count, and those of us sporting our own fitbit can relate to that daily goal. As Noreen, Tess and Rosie ‘step’ their way across Europe, they remind us of the importance of having goals, making a plan to get there, and most of all enjoying time with good friends along the way.
With vivid descriptions of the ship and each stop along the way, readers will feel like they are on a river cruise themselves. Noreen, Tess and Rosie share a love of lavender and readers can almost smell the lavender as they read descriptions of the lush lavender fields in France. Cook also incudes practical tips and recipes at then end of several chapters so readers can recreate them and share in the magic of lavender for themselves.
Part escape, part self-help guide, and all fun – this book is a great way to vicariously travel with Noreen and her friends and perhaps help readers find their purpose too.
I highly recommend this book to everyone who could use some positive motivation in his or her life.
Disclosure I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review
Great
Nice follow up to the first book. Would love to see a 3rd book about the ladies.
I always enjoy reading Claire Cook. Her books are witty and engaging.
Another great book by Claire Cook. I enjoyed returning to follow the adventures of the Wildwater Walking Club (one of my favorite books of hers) as they continue their adventures in France. There is a great witty edge to her writing but it's not over the top. A lot of the references hit home with me (music, past-times, fashion, etc.) I always enjoy her books and have read most of them. I'd recommend picking this up along with the first Wildwater Walking Club book. Hope a third book for this group of characters comes along someday.
Having loved the first Wildwater book, I bought this one immediately for . It was just "average." Tedious overuse of the phrase "How would/could/should that look?" was one downer. A really immature minor story line was another. But worst of all was the characters--they were flat and lifeless in this book. They had been fun in book one. I love Claire Cook and really enjoyed book 1. But this one was just "ok."
